This Valentines Day

Letter to the reader:

The poem contrasts fleeting, materialistic love with the eternal, unwavering love of God. It questions societal expectations and emphasizes that true love is found in time, kindness, and connection—ultimately pointing to Christ’s love as the greatest of all.

Red, white and flowers,

But what of love?

What of the one whose love story

isn't for the ages?

What if the stages stepped on,

mirror your own beating heart?

The audience cheer,

waiting for the song to play,

the musicians begin.

But the rain isn't falling?

Your room is not two storied,

no boom box,

complaining neighbors

or overprotective father disapproval steers.

Stairs.

As you climb,

Will the top be enough?

What of the hand above you?

Encouraging you to push past the pain?

A world of wonder,

sunsets,

kisses in heavy rain,

embraces by fireplaces

in homes

rented only for the weekend.

Anniversaries of milestones made alike many others,

yet the one that allows age to become obsolete never made.

Is only a few months worth the celebration,

did you really need to go on another vacation?

Photographs on screens

but what of the frames down the hallway?

The story of the skipped heart beat,

but what of the sleepless nights?

A day, like another

yet we cover it in red,

we kill flowers,

dead.

Wrap them in ribbons and

paint lipstick kisses on broken hearts.

Broken banks

mirror broken hearts

Grand gestures,

 required,

obligations for genuine words.

And we wonder

why Hallmark never goes out of business.

Self love,

galentines,

pinata hearts,

beaten with bats

yet it is our own that is bruised.

Seafood,

oysters,

& squid games make

for our guide to the winner of this round.

What do we do when the expectation is pain?

Why do we contort to the game?

Did we agree to play?

$200 for passing go?

A shoe, thimble, top hat, race car,

but when did we turn on the engine?

Sunday drives

to spend time together

now apart to purchase items

to show love.

Yet the overtime is what strained us.

A day to remember love,

not to compare,

not compete

but share.

Memories do not require platinum cards,

but

time,

kindness

& connection.

Let this day be one of celebration,

Do not allow the calibration of another's

love story to dim the light of your own.

The world went grey,

dim.

For more than a day.

Three,

It was His love,

compared to dead roses?

They die in a week.

Weak,

mankind,

yet the Trinity's powers

is what allows our own heart to beat.

Valentines, a day for love.

And the greatest?

A sinless,

kind

& definition

of the very word.

But what can love be without

1 corinthians 13:4-8

(NIV) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails.

Love Never fails.

His

Love

Never

Fails.
